OVERVIEW: The SET-65E Enot is a heavyweight, electrically powered, ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo developed by the Soviet Union for export. It uses active/passive acoustic homing and is designed to engage submerged targets from surface warships.

DETAILS: "SET" stands for "Samonavodyashchayasya Elektrotorpeda" (self-guided electric torpedo), "65" refers to its 1965 design lineage, and "E" indicates its export configuration. The SET-65E is derived from the Soviet Navy's original SET-65 torpedo and was modified to be launched from 533 mm ship-based torpedo tubes. It uses an active/passive acoustic seeker with an electric motor powered by a silver-zinc battery, optimized for deep and shallow water ASW engagements. The export version retained most of the original capabilities while simplifying interfacing and logistical support for foreign navies.

The NATO designation ET-80A[67] corresponds to the SET-65E. It featured improvements over the earlier SET-53ME, including greater range, better target discrimination, and improved reliability in cluttered acoustic environments.

TYPE: Heavyweight Anti-Submarine Guided Torpedo

FUNCTION: After launch from surface ship torpedo tubes, the SET-65E activates its seeker to locate and home in on enemy submarines using active/passive sonar. It is effective against diesel-electric and nuclear-powered submarines in open-ocean and coastal environments.
